Important: An Update on the Island Project

You should be working on Parts 3 and 4 of your Island Project.  Here is some help for completing these sections:

Part 3 (Politics): This section is asking you to describe which government system you would want if you were in charge and which government system you would want if you were a regular citizen on your island.  Your answers for each should be different.  If you would like your answers to be the same, you have to provide extra support for WHY.  You will need to use the terms we have discussed in class about governments (for example, autocracy, dictatorship, oligarchy, democracy, etc.) and defend your stance.

Part 4 (Economics):
For questions 1 &2: We discussed natural resources in class.  You will need to look at your island and think of what natural resources your island has.  For example, do you have trees for wood? Do you have mountains that are rich in minerals?  Do you have oil on your island that you could dig for?  Some of your natural resources might not be visible in your drawing but could be underground (i.e. oil) or in the surrounding water (i.e. fish).

For question 3: You will need to say if your island is Pre-Modern, Modern or Post-Modern.  To answer this question, you will need to consider these questions:  Is my island rich in natural resources?  Is there enough land for farming/digging/etc?  If not, would people on my island need to trade for natural resources and then make the natural resources into products?  Is my island stable enough to be a Post-Modern economy?  For this last question, you would need to consider if your government (you should choose one of the governments you discussed in Part 3) and your natural resources/trade opportunities.

For question 4:  Looking at your government (again, choose one that you discussed in Part 3) and your resources, what would your type of economy mostly likely be (capitalism, socialism, communism) and why?

For each question, be sure to defend your answer.

Good luck and will discuss this further in class.
